Q: What is your current occupation?

A: This is my 22nd year in education. I have served as a teacher, ARI-PAL reading coach, school improvement supervisor, assistant principal, and principal. Currently, I am a senior leadership coach for the Southern Regional Education Board, where I coach and provide professional development to district and school administrators on implementing best practices for continuous improvement.

Q: How long have you been on the school board, and what inspired you to join?

A: I have been a member of Jefferson County’s school board since February 2019. I believe a quality education should be provided for all students and I was encouraged to run for the school board by one of my former superintendents.

Q: What excites you most about being a school board member?

A: Providing innovative educational opportunities for students and watching them succeed in all areas of life.

Q: What’s one key thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?

A: I have learned the importance of collective efficacy to build a community of innovation and success.

Q: Are there any special initiatives or projects you are particularly proud of accomplishing with your board? Anything you’re looking forward to working on with them?

A: Working with the superintendent, our board has expanded educational opportunities for students by growing our Signature Academies in high schools, creating themed elementary schools, investing in several capital projects, and partnering with various stakeholders across Alabama to provide resources, internships, externships, and experiences. We look forward to offering more opportunities by adding additional academies through career and technical education and establishing magnet schools.

Q: What advice would you share with incoming board members?

A: Listen to and learn from seasoned board members. Know your role and responsibilities as a board member and work collaboratively with your superintendent and fellow board members. Model the expectations you want to see in others.

Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of your role as a board member?

A: I love to cook, bake (when I have time) and volunteer.

Q: Finish the sentence. One thing you should know about me is…

A: Growing up, I wanted to be an attorney. During the summer of my junior year in high school I volunteered at Camp Birmingham and my passion for working with children was ignited.

Q: What is your favorite inspirational quote or mantra that keeps you motivated?

A: “Success is knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.”- John Maxwell
