 Board Member Spotlight: Nancy Stewart

Each month we'll be featuring school board members in an effort to learn more about the wonderful individuals serving on our boards!

Nancy Stewart joined the Gadsden City school board in 2010 excited for the opportunity to make a difference in children's lives. As a Gadsden native, Nancy is proud to serve the school system that once served her.

What is your current occupation? If retired, what did you do before?

I am a registered dental hygienist and have been in the dental field for 35 years.

What inspired you to join the school board?

I wanted to help children by being a positive influence. As a teenager, I taught a children’s Sunday school class and enjoyed it so much I thought I wanted to be a teacher, but life got in the way, and my goals changed. So the opportunity to serve on the school board has helped me fulfill the dream of making a difference in children’s lives.

What is your favorite part about being a school board member?

My favorite thing about being a school board member is watching our students grow as individuals and achieve their goals. To see students have their dreams come true is a blessing beyond all measure.

What does serving as a school board member mean to you?

It means the world to me. It’s an opportunity that I never dreamed I would have. To have the opportunity to serve in the district where I grew up is more than amazing to me. The chance to help the students, faculty, and staff of some of the same schools I attended is an awesome experience.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I’m an avid Alabama football and basketball fan, but my heart belongs to the Gadsden City Titans. I especially enjoy, along with my daughter-in-law, Lee Ann, watching my husband, Steve, and my son, Beau, coach the Titan basketball teams.

An interesting or fun fact about me is...

While not fun, an interesting fact is that I have epilepsy, and thanks mainly to my seizure alert dog, Jax, I can control it. I hope to help create a program within our school system that will change the stigma about epilepsy.

My favorite inspirational quote is...

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” - Walt Disney

I also want to share that...

I am very proud of our Gadsden City Board’s excellent working relationship with each other and with our superintendent, Tony Reddick.
