Other than your service as a school board member, tell us about your career/professional background.
I retired as Senior Vice President of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham last October, where I served as Chief Financial Development Officer and Director of Spiritual Enrichment.
What inspired you to join the school board?
My inspiration to join the school board was my wife who spent her entire career as an educator, including her final 10 years as an administrator. Observing her, I saw the impact one individual could have on a student, a school and a community. She showed me the value of giving back, and when the opportunity came for me to give, I grabbed it with great passion.
What is your favorite part about being a school board member?
My favorite part about being a board member is being able to serve as an advocate for the educators, administrators, families and students when it comes to issues of equality and excellence.
What are you most proud of accomplishing with your school board?
I am most proud of our ability as a district to have weathered the financial and social storms that we have had to endure over the past several years. I am also very proud of the level of collaboration we've been able to maintain between the board, the administration and the communities we serve.
What do you do outside of the school board, and what are some of your hobbies?
Beyond my life as a member of the Shelby County Board of Education, I serve as Lead Pastor of Faith Church at Oxmoor Valley, and I am a member of the Board of Directors for First US Bank. I fill in all my free time with my wife, Beverly, and my four grandchildren, Boyde, Brooks, Bennett and Evie. My hobbies include travel and mission work; however, most of those adventures have been placed on hold due to the pandemic and grandfatherhood.
