The Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB) Board of Directors has named Baldwin County Board of Education member Shannon Cauley as the association’s president-elect effective Nov. 2, 2020.

Cauley will complete the balance of the term vacated by Bibb County Board of Education member Mike Oakley, who stepped down from the position of president-elect to begin his term as the newly elected mayor of Centreville. Cauley’s term as president-elect will end Dec. 5, 2020, when she is formally installed as president during AASB’s Annual Convention at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham.

“Shannon has proven herself to be a dedicated and hardworking member of the association,” said AASB Executive Director Sally Smith. “We’re delighted that she has been nominated as president-elect, and we know she’ll do a great job leading the association.”

Cauley has been actively involved in the association, most recently serving two terms as District 1 director. She also has served on AASB’s Virtual Schools Committee, Bylaws Committee, Resolutions Committee, Equity Committee and has undergone training to assist with AASB’s Insight Edge communication style assessment program.

Cauley also has been engaged in numerous civic and community organizations. She has been a school volunteer as well as vice president and president of PTA boards and currently serves as an ex-officio member of the Spanish Fort Education Enrichment Foundation. She previously served on the board of the Baldwin County Education Coalition.

A member of the Baldwin County school board since 2013, Cauley has achieved the Master Level in AASB’s School Board Member Academy, earning nearly 270 training hours.

“It is such an honor to have been nominated as president-elect of AASB,” Cauley said. “I am excited to step into this important role serving the association and advocating for public education in Alabama.”

Cauley lives in Spanish Fort with her husband, Mark, and their two children.
