Leadership Lens: February 2026
Insights & Inspiration for School Board Leaders
12-Feb-2026

We're excited to launch a new feature, "Leadership Lens," delivering insights and inspiration to support you in your vital role as a school board member. Our Leadership Development team will share practical wisdom, fresh perspectives and motivation to help you lead with confidence and purpose. We hope these nuggets encourage and energize you as you serve your schools and communities.
Leadership Lens: Love is a Verb
In 1992, DC Talk released a hit single called “Luv is a verb.” I remember being in college and going to one of their concerts singing along with the lyrics:
Love is a serious word (serious, serious word)
Hey, I think it's time ya learned
I don't care what they say
I don't care what ya heard
The word love, love is a verb
During this month designated for “love,” these words are a great reminder that our actions speak louder than words. As a board member, which speaks louder – your words or your actions? The climate in today’s world can be tough on educators as expectations mount from all sides. As a natural encourager, I lean into the idea of giving words of affirmation to those around me. While important, our words alone are not enough. Our actions validate the words we say. We may give a great speech and declare that “We have the best staff in Alabama” while simultaneously rejecting resources needed to implement required programs. Which speaks louder? We may state how proud we are of various teams for achieving success and then argue amongst one another while creating distrust and division. Which speaks louder?
So, what can we do? We can follow the words of Benjamin Franklin: “Well done is better than well said.” We can be respectful of the expressed perspectives of others. We can find common ground and work for the good of the students we serve. Sometimes this means letting go of a little of our own agendas to better serve the common good. We can serve in our capacity as board members to set a vision, secure resources and hold each other accountable.
Mahatma Ghandi once said that “Action expresses priorities.” What you do speaks louder than any well-articulated bundling of words.
This month, I will recommit to being more mindful of expressing love with my actions – will you join me?
