Longtime Education Attorney Carl Johnson Honored with Posthumous AASB Legacy Award

The Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB) posthumously honored Attorney Carl Johnson with its prestigious Legacy Award, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to public education in Alabama over a distinguished 44-year legal career.

Presented Dec. 5 during AASB’s annual convention in Montgomery, the award highlighted Johnson’s steadfast commitment to supporting school boards, educational institutions and local governmental entities throughout his career. Johnson’s widow Ann and colleagues from the law firm of Bishop Brooks attended the award ceremony.

“Carl Johnson exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and service to public education,” said AASB Executive Director Sally Smith. “His guidance, legal expertise and unwavering dedication have left a lasting impact on Alabama’s educational community. We are proud to honor his legacy with this award.”

Johnson devoted the majority of his career to representing public educational agencies and institutions and earned the highest rating in the Martindale-Hubbell legal directory. Recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America“ in education law, he also received accolades such as “Best of the Bar“ by the Birmingham Business Journal, “Super Lawyer“ by Thompson-Reuters and Business Alabama Magazine and was listed among the Top 50 lawyers in Alabama in the Mid-South edition of the Super Lawyers publication.

A former president of the Alabama Council of School Board Attorneys, Johnson played a key role in shaping education policy, including serving as the principal author of the Students First Act of 2011. He authored numerous articles on education law and frequently spoke on legal topics of importance to school boards and educators. Throughout his career, he was regularly engaged by AASB to submit Friend of the Court appellate briefs in cases affecting Alabama public education.

The Legacy Award, created to recognize visionary leadership in K-12 education and exemplary contributions to the association and local school boards, has only been awarded three times before, most recently in 2024.

“Carl’s contributions will continue to influence education leaders and policymakers for years to come,” Smith added. “This award ensures his remarkable service and dedication are remembered and celebrated.”

The award presentation was one of several highlights of AASB’s 2025 Convention & Delegate Assembly, which drew hundreds of school board members and education leaders to Montgomery. The event also featured keynote presentations from leading voices in education and public service.
