Give us some background on yourself. What is your current occupation?
I am a 1976 graduate of Chilton County High School and a 1980 graduate of Alabama State University with a bachelor's degree in business management. I'm also an honorably discharged veteran as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.
I have been married over 30 years and I have two children and a daughter-in-law. I serve as Vice Board Chairman of the Wetumpka YMCA and have been on the board there for more than 20 years.
I also serve on the board of Alpha Upsilon Lambda (Montgomery) chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated's Educational Foundation. I am retired from a 30-year career at Alabama Power where I worked in a number of departments including fleet services, line crew and field service representative, to name a few.
What do you enjoy most about being a school board member?
Seeing young people succeed and find a lifelong career!
What is one thing you have learned while serving as a school board member?
Whatever decision you make, someone will not be satisfied. It is something that you learn to deal with.
Is there any accomplishment or goal you’ve completed with the school board that you are especially proud of?
My greatest success story is the formation of a county-wide Black history poster and essay contest for all students to enhance their reading and writing skills. Last year was the first year of the contest, and I learned there had not been something like this before! We awarded cash prizes that we collected from local businesses and officials. We’ve had 88 participants, so the initiative is doing well.
What are some of your hobbies?
Basketball, football, traveling and music!
What is a fun or interesting fact you would like to share about yourself?
I was a DJ at a local radio station in my younger days. I was the night guy, so I worked Fridays from 11 p.m to 6 a.m. and then Saturdays and Sundays from midnight to 6 a.m. I got about an hour of sleep and then headed to church on Sunday mornings!
Do you have a personal or professional motto/ favorite quote?
"Always be concerned about the least of beings."
