Wayne Boswell became a member of the Butler County school board in 2021 after devoting more than three decades to the school system as an educator. He is committed to improving the quality of education for public school students and giving back to his community.

Q: What is your current occupation? If retired, what did you do before?

A: Retired educator – 39-year employee of the Butler County School System. I served as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, acting principal and for 32 years as a central office administrator. In 2005, I was interim superintendent of education.


Q: What inspired you to join the school board?

A: I believe in public education and wanted to continue to serve as an advocate for every student. I am student centered, instruction focused, and have an interest in finance and extracurricular activities. As a board member, I can continue to give back to my community.


Q: What is your favorite part about being a school board member?

A: Representing the people of District 4 and staying engaged with the education of children and youth of Butler County.


Q: What’s one thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?

A: It is great to be serving with four other board members who are truly interested in the education of children.


Q: Is there anything you are particularly proud of accomplishing as a board member (i.e., new initiatives or special projects…)?

A: Construction of a stadium on the Greenville High School campus and a gym (with stage) at McKenzie School. Improvements in test scores and report card grades for our schools.


Q: What is one piece of advice you would share with an incoming board member?

A: Establish relationships with fellow board members and the community.


Q: What are some of your hobbies?

A: Reading, working in the yard, and watching my nephew play high school baseball.


Q: Is there a fun or interesting fact you would like to share about yourself?

A: In addition to being an educator, I also served in the Alabama Army National Guard in two different Military Police (MP) companies in various assignments, including basic combat training at Fort Jackson and Police (MP) School at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
