Board Member Spotlight: Shannon Deloney

Each month, we'll be featuring school board members in an effort to learn more about the wonderful individuals serving on our boards!

Shannon Deloney became a member of the Dale County school board in 2016 with a commitment to supporting public school students. Her involvement in education began as a volunteer in her child's school and now she plays a role in helping students all over Dale County.

Read below to learn more about Shannon!

Q: What is your current occupation?

A: Assisting our family owned business and volunteering, usually with a camera in hand!

Q: What inspired you to join the school board?

A: I began volunteering when my oldest son began kindergarten. I was involved in PTOs, athletic organizations and committees. This seemed to be a natural progression. With the previous board member as an amazing mentor, I felt confident that I could bring another perspective to the table.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a school board member?

A: The students. First and foremost, always. Watching them learn and grow in the classroom and outside of it, and having a small part in helping them have what they need to follow their paths in this part of their lives.

Q: What’s one thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?

A: Listen. Learn. Listen. Learn. Repeat. And to never stop doing either of those things.

Q: Is there anything you are particularly proud of accomplishing as a board member (i.e., new initiatives or special projects…)?

A: There are so many fantastic things happening in our school district, we are very grateful and blessed with exceptional educators and leaders. I think our new career tech center is a huge opportunity for many students.  This enables us to offer our students additional skills and college credits.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would share with an incoming board member?

A:  Listen  and learn. In the beginning, you don’t know what you don’t know! Other AASB members are great assets, they can share their experiences to help you.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?

A: Family, reading, photography, and I'm an avid sports fan!

Q: Is there a fun or interesting fact you would like to share about yourself?

A: I am the proud daughter of a military family. I began pre-k and graduated high school in Germany.

Q: Do you have a favorite inspirational quote you can share with us?

A: "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." - Mother Teresa
