Q: What is your current occupation?
A: I am the Associate Chief Information Officer at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center. I am retiring this year after 39 years at MSFC. I’ve worked in information systems there the whole way through.
Q: How long have you been on the school board and what inspired you to run?
A: I’ve been on the Hartselle City Board of Education since 2011. Many of my life opportunities are a result of Hartselle public schools. I wanted to contribute in some way to help other kids gain those same advantages.
Q: How do you think your background and experiences have influenced your approach to board service?
A: My family has been in Morgan County for several generations. We understand and value the role of public education. Also, my work life has always been about “the new.” So I bring a unique combination of perspectives as I join with others to think about offering resources to young people.
Q: What do you enjoy most about being a school board member?
A: I enjoy any opportunity to interact with students of all ages. But, more broadly, knowing that I am contributing in a small way to matters that will add to their potential means a great deal.
Q: Is there anything you are particularly proud of your board for accomplishing? Anything you’re looking forward to accomplishing with them?
A: Over these past 10 years, Hartselle City Schools has built a rich portfolio of opportunities for students. There are resources available to all students in one way or another. I think we’ve solidified a culture that prioritizes that mindset and I’m proud of it.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you would share with an incoming board member?
A: Take your time. Listen more than you talk. It takes a while fully to appreciate the role of a school board member, to understand where you can influence and where you should not.
Q: Outside of working with the board, what are some of your hobbies? We may have heard you’re into music!
A: Yes, I grew up in a musical family and played all different kinds of music when I was younger. I still enjoy it but much more for my own entertainment.
Q: Finish the sentence. One thing you should know about me is…
A: I am fiercely committed to creating opportunities for all students.
Q: Do you have an inspirational quote or mantra that keeps you going?
A: Proverbs 29:18 – “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
