Board Member Spotlight: Larry Merriweather

Each month, we'll be featuring school board members in an effort to learn more about the wonderful individuals serving on our boards!
Larry Merriweather is vice president of the Midfield City Board of Education. He has earned Master Honor Roll in the AASB School Board Member Academy with more than 300 training hours. Larry believes one of the best ways to help others is to listen to them with an open mind.

Q: What is your current occupation?
A: I am retired after serving 38 years as a Department of Corrections officer.
Q: What inspired you to join the school board?
A: Before I became a member of the school board, the state had come in and taken over the school system. I felt like there was an opportunity for me to help make a difference in Midfield City Schools.
Q: What is your favorite part about being a school board member?
A: I don’t necessarily have a favorite part, but I know that I enjoy doing my job! I have served in different positions on the board, and I am always here and willing to work at any position and any capacity.
Q: What’s one thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?
A: I've learned that you have to be approachable. You have to learn from employees and students. I always say, "'Help me help you.' Let me know what's working!"
Q: Is there anything you are particularly proud of accomplishing as a board member (i.e., new initiatives or special projects…)?
A: Being a part of the hiring our process of our new superintendent Dr. Shun Williams! I think he does a fine job, and I am proud of what he has accomplished.
Q: What piece of advice would you share with an incoming board member?
A: Learn to be a good listener, keep an open mind, and be understandable when you make a decision.
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: I love going to Railroad Park, taking my dog out for walks and spending lots of time with my grandkids!
Q: One thing to know about me is...
A: I’m firm, but fair! I believe in second chances, and I’m easygoing.

A: “In order to have a friend... you gotta be a friend.”
