Board Member Spotlight: Katrina Collier-Long


Throughout the year, we spotlight wonderful school board members and showcase the outstanding work being done by school systems across the state!



Katrina Collier-Long has been a dedicated advocate for public education and student success throughout her career. Since joining the Phenix City school board in 2020, she has combined her passion for learning, commitment to service, and student-centered approach to help shape opportunities for children and families across her community.

Q: What is your current occupation?

A: I proudly serve as principal of Reese Road Leadership Academy in Muscogee County, Georgia. I have dedicated more than 16 years to education, serving in various leadership and instructional roles focused on student achievement, school improvement, and leadership development.


Q: How long have you been on the school board, and what inspired you to join?

A: I have served on the Phenix City Board of Education since 2020. My passion for public education and my desire to ensure that every child has access to high-quality learning opportunities inspired me to serve my community in this capacity.


Q: What excites you most about being a school board member?

A: The opportunity to help shape the future of our students and community excites me the most. I enjoy working collaboratively with fellow board members and district leaders to make decisions that positively impact student success.


Q: What’s one key thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?

A: I have learned that effective governance requires listening, collaboration, and maintaining a focus on what is best for students, even when facing complex challenges and decisions.


Q: Are there any special initiatives or projects you are particularly proud of accomplishing with your board? Anything you’re looking forward to working on together as a team?

A: I am proud of our board's commitment to academic excellence, facility improvements, student support services, and workforce readiness initiatives. I look forward to continuing our work to expand opportunities for students while strengthening partnerships with families and the community.


Q: What is one piece of advice you would share with an incoming board member?

A: Always remember your "why." Keep the main thing – the main thing and remain student-centered, be willing to learn, listen to diverse perspectives, and understand the important distinction between governance and daily operations.


Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of your role as a board member?

A: I enjoy spending time with family and friends, community service, mentoring young leaders, traveling, planning special events, and supporting educational and civic organizations.

A: One thing you should know about me is that I believe every child can succeed when given the right opportunities, support, and encouragement.


Q: What is your favorite inspirational quote or mantra that keeps you motivated?

A: "To whom much is given, much is required."

This quote reminds me daily of the responsibility we have as leaders to serve others, create opportunities, and make a positive difference in the lives of children and families.
