Q: What is your current occupation? If retired, what did you do before?
A: I served in the United States Army for a total of 28 1/2 years. While in the military, I earned a bachelor's degree in criminology, and I also studied music.
Q: How has your military experience shaped your approach to school board leadership?
A: My military training gave me structure in reference to protocol and chain of command. I was able to share with the school board how decision-making and operations can work better with a systematic approach.
Q: How long have you been on the school board, and what inspired you to join?
A: I have been a part of the Macon County school board for five years. I am a product of Macon County. I attended elementary, middle and high school here. When I came back home after serving in the military one of my college mates was a principal at our high school alma mater. I was approached to be a JROTC administrator at the high school. I initially said no, but eventually agreed and ended up teaching for 15 years right here in Macon County. I was inspired to continue serving the community that developed me!
Q: What excites you most about being a school board member?
A: Good reports! When our schools display improvement that brings me the most joy!
Q: What is one piece of advice you would share with an incoming board member?
A: I would advise new board members to evaluate themselves on how well they can be a team player. Coming in and being able to work with the board determines how things flow.
Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of your role as a board member?
A: I work very closely with several community organizations such as the Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) program, where I help make decisions on distributing grant funds, IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, Alabama Grow More, Give More, the volunteer fire department and my local food pantry.
Q: Finish the sentence. One thing you should know about me is…
A: My faith means a lot to me! I’m heavily involved in my church as a trustee and church delegate.
Q: What is your favorite inspirational quote or mantra that keeps you motivated?
A: I always live by the saying "get to know your neighbor or those who need help.”
