Board Member Spotlight: Amy Carter

Each month, we'll be featuring school board members in an effort to learn more about the wonderful individuals serving on our boards!

Amy Carter ran for a seat on the Cullman school board in 2020. Her passion for public education and desire to aid the success of her growing community are at the root of everything she does.

Read below to learn more about Amy!

Q: What is your current occupation?

A: I am an oncology sales executive with Myriad Genetics.

Q: What inspired you to run for the school board?

A:  I decided to run for school board because I have a passion for public education and understand the importance of educating children. I knew that our community was growing and that our school system would need to accommodate new needs.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a school board member?

A:  My favorite part of being on the school board is being in the schools and seeing the inspired faces of all ages. I recently helped with car line on the opening week of a new school and it was my favorite thing I have done all year! Seeing the excitement of the children as well as the parents was infectious.

Q: What’s one thing you’ve learned since becoming a board member?

A: The decisions we make every day for the most part affect people's children...their babies. I have learned to be a better listener to hear their concerns about their most precious asset.

Q: Is there anything you are particularly proud of accomplishing with the board?

A: We have done a complete add on and remodel of our primary and middle schools that are completed or near completion. We are also on the cusp of an addition to our high school and combining our two elementary schools into one. I am so proud of the work that has been done as there has been a great amount of collaboration between our city leaders and stakeholders! Our teachers, administrators and families have shown extensive flexibility and grace during these processes and it has been so appreciated.

Q: What piece of advice would you share with an incoming board member?

A:  The first year will be a huge learning curve, but take it all in. Learn as much as you can about the inner workings of the school system as a whole. The superintendent wears many hats and learning everyone’s role is so important.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?

A: When I am not at work or doing school board work, I love to be out on the lake. I have also helped found a non-profit called Les Dames of Cullman which provides mentoring to women in our community and necessary hygiene products to adolescent girls in our city and county schools.

Q: One thing to know about me is...

A: I majored in education at Samford University and became an athletic trainer.  I worked as a certified athletic trainer (ATC) in a variety of schools for 10 years before moving into sales!

Q: Favorite inspirational quote...

A:  I’m not a huge quotes person, but something I say often is, “Your cheese got moved, adapt and deal with it.”
