The first place winner of AASB's 2013 statewide "How We Achieve Excellence in Our School" video contest is Horseshoe Bend High School of Tallapoosa County. In second place is Gadsden City High School of Gadsden City Schools, and the third place winner is Florence High School of Florence City Schools. An honorable mention was also awarded to Piedmont High School of Piedmont City School District for the "Best Use of Music." The contest was sponsored by AASB, Fairbanks LLC and by Alabama Public Television through an American Graduate grant funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Board of School Comm. of Mobile County v. Thomas, -- So.3d --, 2013 WL 135563 (Ala.Civ.App. Jan. 11, 2013) case began prior to the Students First Act. It addressed the proper forum for determining whether a teacher had attained tenure. Huntsville City Board of Education v. Frasier, -- So.3d --, 2013 WL 646461 (Ala.Civ.App. Feb. 22, 2013), originally reported in the January 2013 edition of Court Report, has a new opinion. The Huntsville case also began before the Students First Act went into effect and involved the board's decision to terminate several employees after declaring a reduction in force due to financial difficulties. | More

In June, the Alabama Association of School Boards will launch its first courses on the new School Board U portal for online school board training. The courses are designed to help school board members comply with the School Board Governance Improvement Act of 2012. That act targets school board effectiveness.
