Founded in 1949, the mission of
the Alabama Association of School Boards is to develop excellent school board leaders through quality training, advocacy and services. AASB offers relevant training designed to increase school board effectiveness in areas such as boardmanship, finance, student achievement, and technology.
AASB's School Board Member Academy keeps boards up to date on vital public education and school governance issues through informative programming. Participants earn credit hours toward Academy achievement levels, and these highly attended events offer exhibitors and sponsors an opportunity to network with key education leaders. Parliamentary procedures matter and, when used effectively, can help a board improve debate, discussion and ultimately decision making! Join Zenda Bowie, Director of Field Services for the Georgia Association of School Boards and LuAnn Bird, AASB’s Director of Board Development, as they present best practices for effective meetings.
The cost is only $40 per person or $150 per group. Participating school board members earn 1.5 hours in the School Board Member Academy. Aug. 23-Sept. 16, 2010 (Core Course, 1 Academy Hour) - Fall District Meetings -- one in each of the nine AASB districts -- are an opportunity for training in your own backyard. Meetings generally start with an opportunity for networking and idea-sharing before dinner and the presentation. The program is a member service and the only cost is dinner. AASB's School Board Member Academy brings together nearly 600 school board members and education leaders from across the state for its annual convention. The three-day event features nationally acclaimed speakers in information-packed general sessions, an array of clinics on timely topics and exhibits of school products and services. Also, delegates from member school boards assemble for the business meeting to elect AASB’s leaders, vote on resolutions and approve bylaws changes.
New school board members are urged to participate in the Dec. 2 AASB Leadership II orientation course just prior to the association’s convention. Every member must take both parts of the leadership orientation course to advance in the Academy.
