At the June 13 state Board of Education meeting, the board adopted emergency rules to allow industry certified professionals a workable pathway into career tech classrooms. The board announced its intent to amend the Alabama Administrative Code to make the rules permanent at its next meeting. The boards’ action makes it easier for industry experts to share their skills and knowledge to strengthen training in the classroom. A list of Alabama's persistently low-performing schools will be released to the state Board of Education – and the public – at the June 13 meeting for K-12, said state Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice. "The list" is a key element of the contentious Alabama Accountability Act passed by the Legislature this year. Bice, however, plans to adjust the list for schools that have experienced substantive growth and progress and vows not to release an "incorrect" list. The first place winner of AASB's 2013 statewide "How We Achieve Excellence in Our School" video contest is Horseshoe Bend High School of Tallapoosa County. In second place is Gadsden City High School of Gadsden City Schools, and the third place winner is Florence High School of Florence City Schools. An honorable mention was also awarded to Piedmont High School of Piedmont City School District for the "Best Use of Music." The contest was sponsored by AASB, Fairbanks LLC and by Alabama Public Television through an American Graduate grant funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
